ปีนี้ MTV Video Music Awards ต้องจัดงานแบบไม่เหมือนปีก่อนๆ เพราะ COVID-19 โดยถ่ายทอดรายการแบบ virtual ออนไลน์จากหลายสถานที่ทั่วนิวยอร์กซิตี้และทุกคนที่ออกอากาศต่างยืนห่างกันแบบ social distancing ตลอดงาน
ตั้งแต่การเปิดงานด้วยการแสดงสุดอลังจาก The Weeknd ในเพลง Blinding Lights แล้ว ตลอดงานก็อัดแน่นไปด้วยการแสดงของศิลปินยอดนิยมแห่งปีมากมาย ไม่ว่าจะเป็น Lady Gaga และ Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, BTS, Miley Cyrus, Da Baby, Maluma, CNCO และ Black Eye Peas พร้อมการมินิการแสดงของพิธีกรสาว Keke Palmer

ทั้งนี้งาน VMAs ปีนี้นั้นได้เพิ่มรางวัลสาขาใหม่ที่มาจากสถานการณ์กักตัวอยู่บ้านเพราะโควิด-19 ด้วย คือ Best Music Video From Home และ Best Quarantine Performance ส่วนสปอตไลท์ตกเป็นของแม่ปีศาจ Lady Gaga ที่นอกจากจะกวาดรางวัลไปถึง 4 รางวัลแล้ว ยังได้รับรางวัลเกียรติยศ Tricon Award ที่ปีนี้ได้จัดมอบเป็นปีแรก แทนที่รางวัล Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award ซึ่งปีที่แล้ว Missy Elliott ได้รับรางวัลนั้นไป
